Pen Friend is on the verge of extinction.
Many of today's generation even don't know what is pen friend.
It was in those good old days ( days when I was not born. I am just 14.) when there was no Facebook, no twitter, no G+ or WhatsApp when people of all ages: a kid who could write to an elderly person, used Pen Friend as their social networking media. It is not something available on the internet.
Todays social network has non of the qualities that pen friend-ing had. By pen friend, we could know how the sender of a message, or a receiver of a message felt. We could read on a piece of paper, their feelings, their character and attitude.
Point is, whoever pen friended, developed a positive attitude.
Not only that. Pen friends had friend did not only have old long lost friends, but also friends all over the world- in many countries e.g. A person here in India had a friend in U.S.A or U.K. or Germany
who probably have never seen each other in real life.
And how did they get their addresses? From the newspapers, magazines, dedicated pen friend address and letter magazines.
People sometimes got commemorative stamps and special postcards.
And It was NOT VIA THE INTERNET. It was by using a pen and paper.
Now, you will not find any address in any magazine or a newspaper telling the address of that random person from another corner of the world.
I tried to google for some websites that were promoting pen friend, but that too was a digital type.
Then one day, dad told me about the Postcrossing Project.
I found it very interesting. www.postcrossing.com
Still there was one hitch.
Postcrossing had all the addresses, but it would give you a random address when requested for one but it was once and for all. Once you send the postcard to a person, that's is, it will be a 1 in 1000000000 chance that you are getting it back from that same person.
You are going it to receive it from another guy, from another corner from the world or maybe the same corner you are in. Its fun, but even if you want to use the original pen friend system, you have to send a request to his email.
There is another small community at reddit where penpal-ing exists.
I made some friends across the globe here.
How I wish pen friend was as popular as those days.
Good Day.
Vig.
